Although I am a native speaker, I am ashamed to call myself so. Can I speak english? Why, yes! But, am I good at speaking english? Yes! Well, yes, I thought so. Before I stepped into a room with Karl, I won’t admit this in front of him, but I truly viewed grammar as, well, useless. I thought it was just some lousy rules we learned as kindergarteners. I mean, who even uses grammar anyways? I knew how to put a period at the end of a sentence, so I thought I was set. I thought that just because I had spoken english since I was in diapers (seriously, I said my first word at 7 months old) relying on my instincts would carry me to success. But then, Karl asked me if I knew the components that make up a sentence. At first I laughed. Like, of course I do, I mean what kind of question is that? And then, I opened my mouth to answer him. To my surprise nothing came out. Me, born in the academically rich streets of Boston, the center of American history, the birthplace of the declaration of freedom, could not for the life of me figure out what made up a sentence. That’s when I started asking myself: what defines a “good” speaker? What are the standards and requirements needed for one to be considered “good” at a language? Must they be literate in all the slang and analogical phrases of expression? Or must they be a professor in the historical origins of the language? My classmates, born and raised in South Korea, knew more about English grammar than any of my American friends back at home. So, did that make them better speakers? They could differentiate between subordinating and coordinating conjunctions but my friends had a wider range of vocabulary and better understanding of complicated texts. It was while I was reading my book one night, that the realization hit me. It is not one or the other, but both. Just as a coin has two sides, there are also two sides to speaking and understanding a language. You see, prior to learning about phrases and appositives, I had just read the words written in front of me. But I had never broken them down to the extent that Karl had done in front of us. By picking apart paragraphs into sentences into clauses into forms of speech, the purpose and meaning of the text became clearer and reading had become easier. It was as if I had been handed over a set of goggles, goggles that when looked through revealed the intricate infrastructures of what seemingly looked like the world’s simplest collection of words. I don’t think I will ever read the same again. It saddens me that such valuable and useless knowledge is looked down upon by the very people that created it. I am discontent with the knowledge my fellow classmates back at home hold regarding the grammar rules of the standard english language. I was fortunate enough to meet Karl, but there is only one of him and millions of clueless children like me, blind to the advantages of knowing basic punctuation rules. He knows when to hold us accountable for our mistakes, but what sets him apart is that he does not just berate us for our accidents and go on with his day. He then goes on to teach us and accurately explain the reasons as to why a question was marked incorrect and does not move on until he is 100% sure that we are 100% sure of why we were wrong and how we can do better. As a first time learner, it can be overwhelming to have so much information tossed at you, so many new words to memorize. Your brain might feel as if it is about to explode. I’ll be honest, I was anxious at first. I was angry that I could not keep up with the other kids, I was discouraged because I was constantly getting questions wrong, and many times I was confused. But everytime that happens, Karl has this innate ability to come up with the simplest examples on the spot. Examples that take a convoluted sentence, and turn them into something I can go “ohhh” and nod my head at. I struggle with asking for help when I need it, maybe I just need to swallow my pride. So it was incredible when I didn't even have to muster up the courage to ask my questions. Karl always comes to me first ready to help, he always asks us “what else?” and never makes us feel bad for not understanding something. He is patient, clear and articulate with his teaching, and wonderfully lively. I can tell that he loves what he does and genuinely wishes to see us succeed. He scolds us not to satisfy an ill-willed intention of a belligerent heart, but because he holds us to a high standard of intelligence and wishes to see us reflect our full potential in the results we produce; and because he cares about his students. We love you Karl
Karl’s class has helped me to learn SAT grammar from a different point of view where focusing on the details is very important and there are rules that has to be followed to fall for the trap choices. During class, he explains the answer choices thoroughly and makes sure that all students understand them. He uses easy examples that can help the students remember the grammar rules easily and makes the class very engaging so that everyone has fun while learning SAT grammar. The grammar class helped to improve not only my SAT grammar score but also the reading section. As a student, being part of Karl’s class has helped enhance my understanding of grammar rules and their multiple applications. As a student who struggled with identifying the specific grammar terms and reducing the number of incorrect grammar questions, after taking Karl’s class, I was able to significantly make improvements in understanding the type of grammar questions and learning the essential tips to minimize mistakes during the test.

Karl 선생님에 대해 수업 내적인 부분들과 외적인 부분들을 나눠서 이야기해보고자 하며, 수업 내적인 부분들에 대해 먼저 설명해 보겠습니다. 문제를 풀이하실 때 답에 쉽게 접근하기 위한 유형별 전략을 소개해주시며, 같은 개념이 사용된 다른 문제를 풀이할 때도 도움을 받을 수 있도록 사용된 방법과 문법 내용에 대해 상세히 설명해 주십니다. 그러나 단순히 문제를 풀이하는 방법에 대해서만 소개하고 넘어가는 것이 아닌, 당장 이 문제를 풀이하기 위해 필요하지는 않은 부분이더라도 다른 문제에서 사용될만한 내용이나 개념에 대해서는 확실히 짚고 넘어가는 것을 통해 학생들이 한 문제에서도 여러가지를 배울 수 있고, 문제의 전반적인 내용을 짚어 완성도 높은 이해를 하고 넘어갈 수 있게 가르쳐주십니다. 영어 뿐만 아니라 한국어 또한 능하시기에 상대적으로 한국어가 편할 수 밖에 없는 한국 학생들에게 영어만으로 이해시키기 어려운 환경에서는 적극적으로 한국어를 범용하시며 학생들이 모르고 넘어가는 부분이 없도록 세심하게 살펴주십니다. 이는 교실 내에 있는 학생들의 수준을 고려하여 상황에 맞게 사용하시기에 학생들로 하여금 “나에게 적절한 난이도의 수업”이라는 생각을 가지도록 만들어주십니다. 또한 사회적인 문제 혹은 역사적, 과학적인 내용에 대한 배경지식이 풍부하시기에 관련 지문이 나왔을 때 그 배경과 연결된 이야기를 소개해주셔서 학생들이 문제를 보다 쉽게 읽을 수 있고, 앞으로 보게 될 관련된 내용에 대해서도 보다 수월하게 풀이해낼 수 있게끔 해주십니다. 이러한 공부 외적인 이야기는 학생들이 수업에 집중할 수 있게 해주는 원동력으로 작용하기도 하며, Karl 선생님의 수업 자체에 흥미를 느낄 수 있도록 해주기도 하는 등 학생들에게 여러 방면에서 도움을 주게 됩니다. 수업 외적인 부분에서도 Karl 선생님께서는 굉장히 좋은 모습을 보여주십니다. Karl 선생님의 가장 큰 장점이라고 생각되는 부분은 학생들의 수준에 대한 이해가 굉장히 빠르시다는 점 입니다. 학생들이 어느 부분에서 고전하는지, 어느 부분에서 강점을 가지는지를 정확하게 파악하시며, 몇 번의 수업 안에 학생들이 어느 이유 때문에 특정 부분을 어려워하는지까지 파악해내십니다. 선생님께서는 단순히 문제점을 파악하는데에서 그치지 않고 이에 대한 해결책을 학생들에게 제시해주시곤 합니다. 이를 위해 수업시간 외에서 학생들을 개별적으로 불러 상담을 해주시기도 하며, 필요에 따라 부모님과 이야기를 나누시기도 합니다. 이 상담을 통해 나오는 해결책은 학생 개인만의 노력을 요하는 것일 때도 있지만 종종 선생님께서 추가적인 시간을 꽤 많이 사용하셔야 하는 것들도 있습니다. 다만 선생님께서는 이에 대해 귀찮음을 내색하지 않으시고 언제나 열정적인 모습으로 학생들에게 도움을 주려고 하시며, 선생님의 이러한 모습은 학생들 또한 열정을 가지고, 또 실력을 향상시킬 수 있도록 해줍니다. 그리고 이러한 수업 외적인 부분에서 보여지는 선생님의 모습은 학생들이 Karl 선생님 자체에 애정을 느끼게 만들어주며 이는 수업 내적인 부분과도 연결되어 더욱 수업에 몰두할 수 있게 만들어주는 발판 역할을 해주게 됩니다. 이처럼 Karl 선생님은 학원이라는 공적인 공간에서 개개인 모두를 만족시키는, 타 학원들에서 찾아보기 힘든 굉장히 좋은 선생님이십니다. 모든 학생들을 긍정적인 방향으로 바라보고 도와주려 하시는 모습을 통해 이 글을 작성한 저 또한 떨어지는 실력에도 자신감을 가지고 많은 성장을 이뤄낼 수 있었습니다.
